DJ Awana, a veteran Ghanaian radio DJ with Adom FM, a subsidiary of Multimedia Group Limited, has died.
The news of his death went viral on social media on Sunday, April 6, 2025, leaving a lot of Ghanaian industry players in shock.
Born Samuel Tei Mensah Nartey, DJ Awana is said to have taken ill last weekend and was recuperating until things turned south on Sunday, April 6, 2025, at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where he succumbed to death.
Since his death, tributes have flooded social media from industry colleagues, friends, and fans who admired DJ Awana’s quiet but impactful contribution to Ghana’s music space.
Manager of highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena, Nana Poku Ashis, was among the first to pay tribute publicly.
“Rest in power, my friend. I promise to keep working on the plan, even in our loss. Team KBKB shares in the pain of DJ Awana’s loss. You positively impacted this music industry even when many didn’t know your facial identity, awananieeooooo. Until we meet again, journey on, DJ; you will be missed.”
Media personalities such as Nana Yaa Konadu Yiadom, Ohemaa Woyeje, and DJ Ashmen have also expressed their condolences, describing DJ Awana as a rare gem whose influence went beyond the decks.
DJ Awana began his illustrious career with Tema-based Adom FM in 2003, quickly establishing himself as a leading figure in Ghana’s radio and live event scenes. His journey saw him move to Oman FM in 2007 before returning to the Multimedia Group to join Hitz FM.
As part of his unique identity, DJ Awana was also well known for his signature jingle, “3y3 Awana nie oo,” which became a familiar and cherished sound among his listeners.
DJ Awana’s legacy as a creative force and trailblazer in the DJ community lives on, and tributes continue to pour in as the nation mourns the loss of one of its most respected musical voices.
