Gyan clears the air on rumoured tension with Andre Ayew, blaming external manipulation for the perceived rift.
ormer Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has dismissed claims of a long-standing rivalry with Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew, alleging that the tension between them was fabricated by individuals with personal interests.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session on Thursday afternoon Gyan clarified his relationship with Ayew, attributing the perceived rift to external manipulation.
“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me, but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people. That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone,” Gyan stated.
The tension between the two players reportedly escalated after Ayew took over the Black Stars captaincy from Gyan in 2019.
The decision sparked widespread speculation, with many suggesting it created animosity between the two.
Gyan, who retired from international football in 2023, had previously addressed other controversies during his career, including his infamous penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup.
On several occasions, he has used social media to speak candidly about his experiences with teammates and challenges in his career.
The former Sunderland striker, who holds the record as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, also expressed a willingness to move past the issue, stressing the need for unity.
