Veteran musician, Ofori Amponsah has expressed his admiration for fellow music legend Daddy Lumba, recounting a heartwarming gesture during their first encounter.
Speaking on TV3, Ofori Amponsah shared how, before his breakthrough in the music industry, he spent years tirelessly trying to get someone to listen to his songs.
“I was in school, and after classes, I would pick up my CDs and go from place to place,” he recalled. “One day, I went to a CD shop around Lapaz, feeling like it was my last attempt. I was on the verge of giving up after four years of walking around trying to get noticed.”
Ofori Amponsah explained that, the shop attendant initially asked if he was a music producer.
He responded no, but the attendant agreed to listen to his music—and loved it.
Ofori Amponsah went on to recount how meeting Daddy Lumba for the first time changed his life. Not only did Lumba praise his music, but he also gifted him money as a token of support.
The Otoolege hitmaker, shared how a chance encounter with a CD shop attendant changed his life. After listening to Ofori’s songs, the attendant mentioned that veteran musician Daddy Lumba was on the lookout for young talent.
The attendant played a pivotal role in helping Ofori Amponsah break into the music industry, though Ofori sadly doesn’t know his current whereabouts to express his gratitude.
Recalling how he met the Makra Mo hitmaker, Ofori Amponsah said Daddy Lumba was surprised to learn that he was the artist behind the beautiful songs he’d heard. “[Daddy Lumba] walked into the room, left, and returned with an envelope. It contained about GH¢5,000 in those days, and he said, ‘You are a star.’”
Ofori further explained that it took another four to five years for the songs to be released because Daddy Lumba had stopped producing music. During that period, Ofori Amponsah was still in school but eventually got expelled, forcing him to find a way to survive.
